International Cricket Council (ICC) has immediately suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), citing extensive government interference in SLC administration. Following the disappointing performance of the team in the World Cup 2023, the Sports Minister in Sri Lanka had dissolved Sri Lanka Cricket. In the tournaments happening in India, Sri Lanka won only 2 out of 9 matches. The Sri Lankan Parliament unanimously passed a joint proposal accusing the officials of Sri Lanka Cricket of being ‘corrupt.’ The government and opposition joined hands to pass a proposal titled ‘Removal of corrupt officials, including the SLC President,’ without a vote. What did the ICC say? The ICC released a statement on this matter, stating that the ICC Board met today and decided that Sri Lanka Cricket is seriously violating its responsibilities as a member. It is necessary to autonomously manage these issues and ensure that there is no government interference in cricket governance, regulation, and administration in Sri Lanka.
