This time in the month of March across the country, the offices of the Income Tax Department will open on all Saturdays. This decision comes after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman directed to resolve the issues and grievances of the taxpayers. Earlier this week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had reprimanded the Policy Making Board of the Income Tax Department (CBDT), for allegedly not responding to taxpayers’ complaints during an event in Bengaluru for the Customs and GST Department. .
While the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is an apex policy-making body for the Income Tax Department, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is the single authority for Customs, Central Excise and GST. According to a senior official of the Income Tax Department, all the offices of the Income Tax Department up to the level of Principal Commissioner will remain open on all Saturdays of this month. It will start from today i.e. March 12.
Let us tell you that till now Saturday and Sunday are holidays of the employees of Income Tax Department. But now all the Regional Offices of the IT Department have also given their respective email IDs on their official Twitter handle to send suggestions and seek clarifications to the taxpayers.
Income tax refund of Rs 67,442 crore
The Income Tax Department has said that it has so far refunded Rs 1.86 lakh crore to 2.14 crore taxpayers in the current financial year. This also includes 1.74 crore refunds worth Rs 35,296.86 crore in 2020-21. The Income Tax Department said through a tweet that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has returned more than Rs 1,86,677 crore to more than 2.14 crore taxpayers between April 1, 2021 and March 7, 2022. At the same time, income tax refund of Rs 67,442 crore was done in 2,11,76,025 cases. While corporate tax refund of 1,19,235 was done in 2,31,654 cases.
